COSTA RICA COFFEE/Granitos BISUNGA
Farm: Vincega Wet Mill; Granitos de Altura del Ortiz area; Santa Maria de Dota process; Yellow honey variety; Catuai; Altitude: 1,700m
The Tarrazu region is a major producer of specialty coffee in Costa Rica, and Dota has long been known as a famous coffee producing area.
This area is home to many top-class farms and micromills, including Los Angeles Micromill, which was ranked No. 1 in COE in 2011, and Montecopay Micromill, which was ranked No. 1 in COE in 2014. The area is known for producing high-quality coffee due to its particularly cool climate.
Granitos de Altura del Ortiz Mill is a family-run mill run by Omar Calderon and his wife, and their four daughters. The parents manage the farm, while the four sisters are responsible for everything from washing to sun-drying and storage.
Although it is a relatively new mill, having been established in 2012, it has a consistent track record of carefully selecting and controlling its coffee, having been awarded top prizes at the COE in both 2014 and 2015. The sisters, who are still in their teens and twenties, confidently tell us that they put more love into their coffee than anyone else, as they carry out each process.
